Artist's Comments

When a lava flow starts to cool, the outer layer of the lava freezes into solid rock, and once the pressure of the liquid inside builds up, the skin cracks open with a loud pop and lava oozes out again. Here, lava oozes from a fresh crack on a cooling lava flow at Mount Kilauea on the big island of Hawai'i.

wow, that's really awesome! If I ever saw that I think I'd rather just zoom reeeeally close and not even attempt to go near it...

Well this lava flow was starting to cool, so it moved really slow and had the consistency of thick syrup. I could get roughly 5-6 feet away from it without it being unbearably hot.

Cool, absolutely nice colors, wish I could see something like this in my lifetime...

that would suck if you triped while taking the shot
I wasn't particularly afraid of tripping. What I was afraid of at the time was whether or not the solid rock I was walking on was actually a thin layer of fresh rock over molten lava.

wow this is the best one of the lava shots yet!
It looks like a giant chocolate eclair with the lava cream breaking out ;)

lol thanks. Although it probably wouldn't be too wise to try to eat that thing.

When lava behaves this way, what with the freezing and cracking open and oozing, it's cooled quite a bit and moves veeery slowly. I was standing around with a bunch of tourists with cameras, patiently waiting for something to happen, and then suddenly we'd here this loud POP and we'd all rush to the lava with our cameras ready.
