Oozing Lava by hitokirivader Oozing Lava by hitokirivader
When a lava flow starts to cool, the outer layer of the lava freezes into solid rock, and once the pressure of the liquid inside builds up, the skin cracks open with a loud pop and lava oozes out again. Here, lava oozes from a fresh crack on a cooling lava flow at Mount Kilauea on the big island of Hawai'i.

That's beautiful. All the ripples in the cooled rock and that big split with the lava coming out. Wow!
Does look a bit like the TV adverts, when they animate cracking open a cough sweet to show the liquid centre :)

I prefer the element water but I'm fascinated by lava. Eerie. xD

I always liked pahoehoe lava for some reason. I think it's because when I was in elementary school, it always looked like burnt cheese that was still "good" on the inside. xD

Forgive my overactive imagination.

BgS: It looks like the "rock" is sticking out its tounge!

LtS: Is the cooled part a rock yet? I know that when melted it is called, inside the Earth, Magma, and outside the Earth, Lava, and when it cools its rock but is it rock when the inside is still oozing?

Awesome capture, however sad that this is onlt a snapshot. I'd love to see this with a slr camera.
Looks somewhat like a blue mussel, well, a "made-of-rock-and-filled-with-lava" blue mussel. :)
